As world leaders and experts gather at the UN Climate Change Conference (COP 29) in Baku, Azerbaijan, the maritime industry is under the spotlight for its role in tackling climate change. With 80-90% of global trade by volume transported by sea, the sector is crucial in driving the global energy transition.
Currently responsible for nearly 3% of global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions annually – a footprint comparable to the combined emissions of Germany and Spain – the maritime industry faces mounting pressure to decarbonise.
One promising solution is the adoption of dual-fuel engines, which offer a flexible approach to cleaner shipping. These engines can operate on traditional marine fuels like heavy fuel oil or switch to less carbon-intensive options such as liquefied natural gas (LNG). While LNG vessels have led the charge, other segments, particularly container shipping, are quickly adopting the technology.
Dual-fuel vessels are set to play a pivotal bridging role, enabling the maritime industry to reduce its emissions while transitioning to more sustainable fuels and technologies. As the sector evolves, these innovations will be instrumental in achieving global climate goals.
