Peel Ports Logistics has recently signed a deal to serve as the new shipping agency service provider for Drax, a renewable energy specialist, handling vessels importing biomass to Liverpool, North West England.
The shipping and freight forwarder will assist in facilitating the arrival of all Drax’s ships, originating from locations like North America, at the £100 million (€117 million) biomass terminal in the Port of Liverpool. Following this, the renewable fuel is transported to Drax Power Station, located near Selby in North Yorkshire, which stands as the United Kingdom’s largest generator of renewable electricity.
Peel Ports Logistics warmly welcomed the Aikaterini bulk carrier, the first of numerous vessels under its representation as a vessel agent, to the Port of Liverpool this month. As per the agreement, the company will extend a welcoming reception to approximately 50 vessels annually at the port, each capable of holding up to 50,000 tonnes of biomass. The services provided to Drax will include supporting logistics around the arrival of the power specialist’s vessels and crew, as well as customs clearance.

Established in 2016, the Port of Liverpool’s biomass handling facility securely stores pellets in 3 purpose-built silos after their unloading from vessels. Managing an annual volume of up to 3 million tonnes of imported biomass globally, the sustainable fuel undergoes daily train transport from Liverpool to fuel the plant located in Selby.
