Efforts Underway to Refloat Grounded Bulker on St. Lawrence River

The St. Lawrence Seaway and Canada’s Algoma Central are collaborating to refloat the Tim S. Dool, a 28,471 dwt bulk carrier that has been grounded on the St. Lawrence River since midday on Saturday, 23 November. The vessel is stranded outside the main shipping channel, allowing vessel traffic to continue uninterrupted as shippers work to complete deliveries ahead of the seaway’s winter closure.

The Tim S. Dool, carrying a cargo of Canadian wheat, departed Port Weller on Lake Ontario on Friday after loading at one of the critical locks on the waterway. The vessel ran aground near Morrisburg, Ontario, at approximately 12:30 on 23 November.

Preliminary reports suggest the 1967-built bulker may have suffered a mechanical failure, causing it to veer out of the channel and become lodged in the river mud. Authorities are assessing the situation and working to refloat the vessel without impacting the busy shipping season.
