SWITCH Leads the Charge in Zero-Emission Marine Technology

Following the successful launch of Sea Change, the first hydrogen-powered ferry in the United States, SWITCH is poised to embark on its next groundbreaking zero-emission vessel project. This initiative will focus on the U.S. construction of an advanced DNVGL-classed RoPax ferry, based on the innovative design of Norway’s MF Hydra.

Owned by Norled, the MF Hydra is a state-of-the-art vehicle ferry with a capacity for 80 cars and 300 passengers. Powered by liquid hydrogen fuel, it has been in operation since March 2023, running a six-nautical mile triangular route.

SWITCH’s trailblazing Sea Change is a 75-passenger hydrogen-powered catamaran ferry equipped with 600 kW electric motor propulsion, 360 kW of fuel cells, and 246 kilograms of gaseous hydrogen storage at 250 bar. This vessel began public service in the San Francisco Bay Ferry system in July 2024, following its U.S. Coast Guard certification in May 2024.

SWITCH continues to redefine sustainable marine transportation, paving the way for a cleaner, greener future on the water.
