Van Oord has clinched a new contract from Spanish energy giant Iberdrola to construct the Windanker offshore wind farm in Germany. This project further solidifies Van Oord’s impressive portfolio in the Baltic Sea, underscoring its expertise and leadership in the global energy transition.
Van Oord’s responsibilities for the Windanker project are extensive. They will manage the transport and installation of 21 XL monopiles and transition pieces, as well as design, supply, and install the inter-array cable grid. This wind farm, with a projected capacity of 300 MW, aligns perfectly with Germany’s ambitious goal to develop 30 GW of offshore wind capacity by 2030.
To tackle the installation of the monopiles, Van Oord will utilize its heavy-lift installation vessel, Svanen. By the time of deployment, Svanen will have undergone significant upgrades, equipping it to handle the next generation of monopile foundations. The vessel, designed to withstand the harsh conditions of the Baltic Sea, boasts an impressive track record, having been involved in major projects such as Baltic 2, Arkona, Danish Kriegers Flak, and Baltic Eagle.
For the intricate task of laying the inter-array cables, Van Oord will deploy its specialized cable-laying vessel, Nexus. This vessel, coupled with the cable burial capabilities of Trencher Dig-It, will ensure that the 29 kilometers of cables are securely installed to the required depth.
The Windanker offshore wind farm is scheduled to be commissioned in 2026, marking yet another milestone in Van Oord’s journey to support the energy transition and contribute to a sustainable future.
