Interview with AntwerpXL 40 Under 40 winner – Rok Strukelj

How long have you been in the Breakbulk industry?

I think I can say that I am in the industry for the whole my life – I have started as a kid by being chased by my father in the port of Koper when I wanted to see the different cargoes being transhipped.

Jokes apart…I’ve been in the project / breakbulk sector for about 10 years now…challenging but rewarding!

Biggest change you have seen in the Breakbulk market in this time?

Considering we are more on the shipping side I would say the biggest change in my eyes has been the role of container carriers becoming breakbulk carriers. Adapting and chasing for high paying cargo is everyones prioprity and the container lines are a great example of such integration and market driven strategies.

The best part of your role?

Challenges! I love being challenged and the reward that comes upon finding the solution.

The most challenging part of your role?

I would say it is finding the right balance between work and free time. Of course this is not a challenge only for our business but for all in general but it is also true that some of our jobs extend late in the night due to different requirements (ship’s on schedule, oversize road transports being done at night, etc.)

Favourite country to travel with for work?

I loved every country that I’ve visited but if I would have to choose one I am afraid that I would have to choose at least three…Japan, UK and Turkey.

Best tip for coping with this lockdown?

Try to find the positive side of the lockdown…perhaps we can all learn something out of it and in the future focus on some new priorities in our private and business lives.

When all reopens which Bar/Restaurant are you most looking forward to visiting after lockdown?

Two of my favourites would be having a beer in the Globe in London and a lamb neck on my friends terrace in Croatia (not really a restaurant but will do)!

What are you most looking forward to at AntwerpXL 2021?

Considering that I would have had to skip the March dates of Antwerp XL as I am about to become a father I am really looking forward to at least attend the event.
